Sugar Bites campaign wins 2014 Communicator Award
The BWA Sugar Bites campaign was awarded a 2014 Award of Excellence (highest honor) in the “Websites - Health” category of the annual Communicator Awards. Sugar Bites is one of three BWA campaigns to receive an Award of Excellence this year.
Sugar Bites was developed by BWA in partnership with First 5 Contra Costa and the Healthy and Active Before 5 collaborative in an effort to prevent childhood obesity in Contra Costa County. The campaign urges parents to protect their kids from sugary drinks and serve them water instead.
The Sugar Bites website, www.cutsugarydrinks.org, serves to complement and support campaign messages transmitted through a variety of media channels including billboards, transit shelters, and convenience store posters. The bilingual (English and Spanish) website provides important information on sugary drinks and why they are unhealthy, the consequences of over consumption, and tips and resources for changing behavior.
Growing consumption of sugary drinks such as soda, juice, flavored milk and sports drinks has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. Today, one of three children in the U.S. is overweight or obese. Obese kids are more likely to become obese adults, putting them at increased risk for type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer.
